‘sitting in here, you can not help think what this is...’ richard wentworth on black maria black maria, with its precarious and curious structure, teased us to interpret it and play with its ideas and physicality. Its magnet was multiple; provoking many ways to engage, play and challenge. in a desperate attempt to explore black maria’s spatial possibility, a group of quasi-scientists experimented with what they had at hand – 1000 plastic colour balls. ambiguously instructed as a game with a means to no end, the balls choreographed the sense of space, moving the players, resonating the sound against the wooden structures, bouncing around and spilling out… the players developed non-verbal communication by doing things, establishing instant rules and understandings, cooperating and deceiving. each attempt might have mounted up to nothing, while contributing to the whole experience of black maria. everyone was welcome to participate and further the chaos! positive failure was an experiment in itself, just a curiosity to see what happens if…. it aimed to capture multiple views of a single event, recording both subjective and personal views of the players, while overall experience was simultaneously captured from several viewpoints. the resulting footages might be shown somewhere, creating another experience… it whispered to us why not make our thoughts into reality…. //////////////////////////////////////////\\\\\ black maria was a major commission by the british artist richard wentworth in collaboration with gruppe. for 4 weeks the black maria timber structure inhabited the atrium in the historic granary building in king's cross. named after edison’s film studio, black maria turned the shed into an auditorium where people were invited to develop their own uses and purposes. blackmaria was supported by arts council england and king’s cross central limited partnership. |
